Applicant Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is Rebuilding Together?

Rebuilding Together is the leading national nonprofit organization with a mission to repair the homes of people in need and revitalize our communities. Through our national network of affiliates, Rebuilding Together works proactively and collaboratively with community leaders, long-term residents, funders and volunteers to foster dialogue and create a movement focused on building safe and healthy homes and communities across the country. We are Rebuilding Together - Duneland, a local affiliate committed to serving those within the Duneland School Corporation.

  • How do I know if I qualify for help from Rebuilding Together?

Most of the neighbors we serve are those with low-income, veterans, people with disabilities, older adults or families with children. Eligibility for services is dependent on the homeowner’s Annual Median Income (AMI), typically eligibility is set at a household income at or below 80% of the local AMI.  The best way to find out if you qualify for our help is to submit an application.

  • What kind of work is done on Rebuilding Day?

Rebuilding Together Duneland has been helping homeowners who are located in the Duneland school corporation since 1996. Over our decades of services we have helped with a variety of projects including roof repair, painting, windows, exterior improvements, handicap accessibility improvements and various outdoor jobs. Our goal is to help homeowners to stay safe and warm with our efforts.

  • Are there any charges to the homeowner for work done on Rebuilding Day?

No, all repairs made by the program are completely free to you. If a team sponsors your home, they will also donate the materials used to make the repairs. All the labor used to do the work is donated by the volunteers and by the skilled tradespeople.

Remember: If anyone asks you for money, they’re not from Rebuilding Together!

  • When will I find out if my home has been selected?

We will send a letter to notify homeowners as to whether or not they have been selected for the program around late July. Unfortunately, not all homes will be chosen for sponsorship. We will do our very best to find a sponsor team for your home.  After your notification, one of our Construction Co-Chairpersons will set up a time to with you introduce you to your house captain weeks before the work day, to determine the scope of work needed to be done.

  • If I am selected, when will the repairs be made?

All of the actual repairs will be made on the first Saturday in October. Volunteers will meet with you many times before that day to plan repairs and purchase materials. In some cases, prep work may start 1-2 weeks before the work day depending on the amount of work that the home needs. On National Rebuilding Day a team of volunteers will make repairs at your home all in one day! There will also be a photographer assigned to take photos before, during and after work day.

  • If I am selected, what are my responsibilities?

Meet with your lead volunteers as many times as necessary between August and October to plan the repairs (minimum of 2 times).

The homeowner(s) is required to be on the premises until all of the volunteers have left for the day.

The homeowner, everyone living in the home, and any friends or relatives visiting during the program must be willing to work alongside the volunteers (if able).

Remember, all work that you receive will be donated by individuals giving up their free time and Saturdays to help you. As a homeowner we ask you to be cooperative, positive and appreciative of the volunteers throughout the entire program.

  • If I am selected, will everything in my house be fixed?

No, we are not able to fix everything in a home during our one-day project. Sponsors select a home that is a good fit for their skills and resources, but they will not be able to do everything on your wish list. Each team has limited time and funds to make repairs for you. Some sponsors are looking for “light” work, such as painting and minor repairs. Only a few are able to take on major construction projects.

Community Projects

Rebuilding Together Duneland selects projects from nominations by neighborhood groups, churches, neighborhood development corporations, city housing inspectors, priority boards and individuals.
